Menopause is a very difficult time in a woman’s life because of the many changes her body goes through. Some women only experience mild symptoms, others will suffer severe menopausal symptoms. Not only does she undergo physical changes but she also feels sometimes emotional trauma at the loss of her fertility and because of hormonal fluctuations. Other women will be glad that the days of having children are over. It all depends on the person. One of the many problems that some women face during this time is sleep problems.

One of the main reasons for sleep problems during menopause is hormonal fluctuations. A reduction in estrogen levels results in an inability of muscles to relax. It also leads to hot flashes and night sweats that interrupt a woman’s sleep. Doctors also believe that lower levels of this hormone as well as melatonin and progesterone also lead to breathing difficulties that result in interrupted sleep. A woman going through menopause also has lower levels of progesterone in her body. This hormone usually induces sleep in the human body and its reduced levels therefore leads to sleep problems, specifically known as insomnia.

Apart from hormonal imbalances, a woman’s troubled psyche because of the changes in her body can also lead to anxiety and depression. These states also make it very difficult for her to fall asleep easily or even to have an uninterrupted sleep at night. The problems increase if she also has relationship problems during this time, which unfortunately are very common during this stage. It is best to embrace aging and accept the changes and do what you can to make yourself healthier and better.

Sleep problems during menopause cause a lot of problems for the unfortunate woman. She finds it difficult to concentrate on things and also is irritable at all times. Unfortunately, this lack of sleep and the fatigue that it causes also leads to a weaker immune system, making her prone to all sorts of ailments. It is very important that she keeps her weight down and stays away from alcohol, caffeine and drugs so that she does not suffer from disrupted sleep during this important period in her life. Melatonin and bioidentical hormone therapy will help immensely.
